The first 50 boxes of pet food, collected around Hawke's Bay by the Cans for Canterbury campaign were due to arrive in Christchurch on Monday. A Conroy Removals van cleared out donations collected at libraries in Hastings, Napier and Central Hawke's Bay.
"We are already well on our way to sendingthe next 50," Cans For Canterbury organiser Jessica Maxwell said.
The community has rallied behind the cause with support from across the region, including local schools and kindergartens.
" Te Mata Primary School has been great with their donation, filling 18 of the 50 boxes sent," Ms Maxwell said.
"Greenmeadows Primary also gave a very generous donation."
Other schools have opted to give money to the campaign with Taradale Primary offering the proceeds from a gold coin donation mufti day to be held on March 28.
Donations from Carlyle Kindergarten, Lucknow Kindergarten and Peterhead Kindergarten will all be sent this week.
Ms Maxwell said while pet blankets and toys would not be accepted as donations, unused animal carry cages would be very helpful.
"Paw Justice uses the cages to catch strays and they could be filled with pet food so they won't take up extra space."
The campaign to collect tinned and dry pet food continues, and any donations can still be dropped at local libraries.
