Police have revealed that an item resembling an improvised explosive device was at the centre of an explosives alert late yesterday at a Napier cemetery.

The supposed IED was found near the Wharerangi Lawn Cemetery and returned services cemetery and "neutralised" by 7pm by a New Zealand Defence Force explosive ordinance disposal team, police media staff said.

"Police will be making further inquiries around the item," police said.

It had been "retrieved" earlier in the day and a cordon put in place with officers stationed near Cato Rd, Poraiti, just off Prebensen Drive.
