A special occasion is on the horizon for Hastings resident Elizabeth Martin, who later this month will celebrate 70 years of writing letters across the world.
Mrs Martin sent her first letter to English Barbara Finch in 1947, just days after she turned 14.
Mrs Finch's Kiwi school teacher had a Woman's Weekly magazine which featured a list of people interested in having a pen pal - including Mrs Martin.
"They put the names into a hat and my name came up and I was paired off with Barbara. It just started from there."
Mrs Martin - who turns 84 soon - said writing to someone she had never met was actually "quite easy". The letters sent between Wellington and Didcot, England, shared what happened on the weekend, boyfriends they had, and other events in their lives.
