The Hawke's Bay Diwali Festival of Lights saw Napier's Sound Shell brimming with stalls, dancers and exotic food aromas at the weekend.

Organised by Multicultural Association Hawke's Bay and the local Indian community, the region's version of the annual Hindu festival aims to showcase Indian culture.

Multicultural Association Hawke's Bay President Sook Hua Lee said the event was a resounding success, despite cold downpours on Saturday evening.

A brief hail shower caused organisers to cancel the annual fireworks display, but it couldn't dampen a lively atmosphere.

An opening ceremony featured an address from Napier Mayor Bill Dalton and a symbolic lighting of candles.

The packed Sound Shell featured Indian food and arts and crafts stalls. There was also live entertainment from local dance groups.

"Throughout India the festival is very important and celebrated by most Indians. This was a celebration of just one of many cultures we represent."

Organising committee member Sharada Naidu said the festival was "exotic, energetic and lively".

"Every year it gets better and better.

"We are quite a diverse people and this is a chance to show our culture to others, and showcase the significance of Diwali."

Diwali is an ancient event on the Hindu calendar, which involves a lighting of candles to spiritually signify the victory of light over darkness.
