The sale of Mangaorapa Station for more than $20 million last week is one of the largest purchase prices recorded for a farm in Hawke's Bay.
The 2370ha station near Porangahau in Central Hawke's Bay will remain in Hawke's Bay hands after being bought by the Anderson family for an undisclosed
sum. They also own Inglis Station in Central Hawke's Bay.
Although rumoured to have sold for $27 million, Bayleys Real Estate agent John Bayley would only say the property had sold for "over $20 million", making it one of the largest farm transactions in Hawke's Bay.
"The property is one of New Zealand's top producing stations and attracted strong interest," he said.
The price is considerably higher than that paid for Matapiro Station last August - the 1882ha farm at Crowthorpe sold for $18 million for land and stock.
Bill Mouat, whose family has owned the farm for the last 60 years, said although sad to be leaving they were looking forward to new opportunities and challenges, including the development of a vineyard.
The family had retained 200ha at the western end of the property for the development - 6ha was already planted in Pinot Noir and Savignon Blanc.
New owner Graham Anderson said he had bought the station because it was closer to their main operation in Central Hawke's Bay.
