The Hawke's Bay slice of $22.8 million allocated to special schools is still not quite within reach.
The allocation, part of the "Success For All - Every School, Every Child" initiative, was announced by the Government last week to upgrade the schools and create new satellite programmes.
In Hawke's Bay two special
schools will receive the funding - Kowhai and Fairhaven schools - and their satellites at Heretaunga Intermediate and Tamatea Primary School respectively.
Kowhai principal Paul Hedley said the schools would attend a meeting with the Government's Property Group to discuss how the money could be spent, to be outlined by a yet-to-be-written policy.
"We are definitely excited to get the funding, but also level minded as we don't know what's in store yet," he said.
Property Group policy manager Jerome Sheppard said the $22.8 million was for additional space at special schools to provide an inclusive schooling system.
The meeting was to ensure a co-ordinated approach was taken.
"This includes ensuring the funding is spent where it is most needed. For example it may be more appropriate for a special school to spend the funding extending their satellite units, rather than base schools, to provide better localised solutions for students."
IHC Director of Advocacy, Trish Grant, said the funding by Government showed support for special schools and a commitment to enhancing the learning of disabled children.
"IHC welcomes Government's investment in disabled children's education. This recognises the additional support that many children need to access the curriculum at their local school," she said.
