An elderly woman arrived back at her Hastings home to find her storage sheds razed to the ground yesterday.

Four large sheds at the back of her Jellicoe St property were "well-involved" by the time fire crews arrived at about 2.30pm, sparking a fourth alarm.

Due to the extreme heat, one firefighter battling the blaze was taken to Hawke's Bay Hospital for heat exhaustion.

Fire Service assistant area commander Nigel Hall said considering these tough conditions, crews worked exceptionally hard and did well.

"We have had a high number of calls this weekend so we want to remind the public we are in a total fire ban."

It was not the only fire yesterday, with a vegetation fire breaking out at Raukawa near where another fire burned 60ha of vegetation on Friday.

A fire spokesman said they were called at 4.10pm yesterday and, at the fire's peak, had 13 appliances from across the bay and four helicopters.

"It covered 100 hectares of grass but has since been contained."

Fire crews were still in attendance last night at about 9pm, dampening down the area.

A Napier Fire Station spokesman said they, like Hastings, had been flat out with a variety of fires this weekend and reminded people that no fires should be lit during this hot and dry period.

Meanwhile, the owner of the sheds, who wished not to be named, was dropped back at 6pm by a friend who said it was all pretty "raw" when they got there.

"It is terrible and not a nice thing for an old lady to come back to. She was just fortunate her house wasn't affected," her friend said.

The sheds were used by the woman for storage.

"They were just handy sheds to have and they stored her belongings for years," she said.

Luckily for the owner, Sarah Frear and Aaron McIlroy spotted the fire early on so crews were able to get it under control pretty quickly.

Mr McIlroy noticed flames and smoke pouring out of the old sheds while driving past so dialled 111 and sprinted towards the buildings.

"By the time we got there the front shed was already up in flames and within about five minutes all four were engulfed."

"We checked to see if anyone was inside and no one was in there or in the house at the front of the property."

Moments after Mr McIlroy made the call fire crews turned up and began to battle the blaze.

Initially the fire was at a third alarm but was upgraded to a fourth alarm when wind and other factors created complications.

More breathing apparatus crews were required to join the five appliances in containing the blaze.

Mr Hall said the sheds were about 30 by 100 sq m, with the front one collapsing first.

One of the sheds also had drums filled with an unknown substance which meant fire crews had to remove them via an aerial appliance using a platform ladder.

To contain the blaze Mr Hall said firefighters used three low pressure deliveries before going to the platform ladder.

There were concerns about a power line which ran through the area of the fire but that was isolated early on.

Mr Hall said there was no threat to nearby homes with a creek running down the right side of the property.

"We are lucky the fire didn't spread in this exceptionally dry and hot weather."
