The driver of a ute towing a diesel trailer which rolled in Central Hawke's Bay this afternoon has escaped without serious injuries.

A police spokeswoman said the crash occurred in Hatuma, south of Waipukarau, near the intersection of Woburn and Hinerangi Rd's about 1.15pm.

She said a ute carrying a diesel trailer had rolled, however the diesel trailer was thought to be empty.

The Lowe Corporation Rescue Helicopter was called, and stood down as the driver appeared to be alert, conscious, and moving.

The 24-year-old man was treated for a laceration to his left leg and for other "cuts and bruises" but did not need to be taken to hospital.

He received treatment from fire fighters before St John ambulance staff arrived just before 2pm.

Hawke's Bay Today understands the man was travelling south on Hinerangi Rd when it appears he lost control on a gentle right hand bend on a slightly downhill section of the road, about 150m from the intersection of Woburn Rd.

His ute and trailer finished upside down in a ditch on the left hand side of the road

A tow truck was on its way to the scene just before 2.30pm to remove the man's upturned ute and trailer, which the driver told police was only carrying about 20 litres of diesel.
