Police are still unable to release the name of a man who died while diving off the Hawke's Bay coast north of Napier on May 4.

A spokesperson said the name is currently subject of an interim suppression order granted by a coroner. Reasons for the order were not available.

The death happened mid-afternoon on a Saturday at popular beach and diving area Waipatiki.

Police said later the man had been reported missing about 1.40pm after he'd disappeared from the sight of diving companions.

A helicopter was brought into a search which ended with the finding of a body about an hour after the alarm was raised, but a police national squad then spent about two days in the area searching for items in the sea that might have been linked to the man.
