Six Central Hawke's Bay people have provided police with information about strange phone calls they have received which may involve a scam to gain access to computer passwords and bank-account details.
"I would recommend if people receive any unsolicited phone calls, that they hang up and take no action on the calls," Waipukurau Police Sergeant Ross Gilbert said.
In each case, the caller told the person who answered that something was wrong with their home computer and asked them to sit in front of it and follow instructions to fix the issue.
They would often say the problem was software-related and could only be solved with their help.
The caller may also have a slight Asian accent and claim to be from Microsoft.
"There are a number of possibilities why someone may want to get remote access to the computer," Mr Gilbert said.
"But it is probably so they can install a phishing or data-logging program that will give them access to passwords and bank-account details."
Mr Gilbert advised that if anyone had problems with a computer, it should be taken to a reputable computer company for repairs.
