The three bike mechanics recruited for Sunday's Big Bike Fix-Up were expecting an hour's work at Havelock North Domain, but instead spent two hours helping riders get their bikes in tip top condition.
The free Big Bike Fix-Up was the latest in a series run by Hastings District Council, and iWay project manager Owen Mata said Sunday's event was a proven success. People heeded advice on iWay's Facebook page and arrived early to beat the rush.
Mr Mata said: "People were coming along to take a look at what was happening, then drove home to pick up their bike and returned to have it put through a road fitness check.
"Lots of kids turned up with their bikes and it was great to see mums and dads looking to take up riding again, now their old bike has been given a new lease on life."
The council was planning more Fix-Up events but bike owners may have to wait until summer for the next one.
The Big Bike Fix-Up is part of the Hastings District Council's iWay project, which aims to get more people walking and cycling.
