Nine cats have been poisoned with antifreeze in a Pirimai, Napier, street.
SPCA staff have been dealing with poisoning cases in Davidson Ave since last year and at least nine cats, including two kittens, have had to be euthanised.
Alesha McKay has lost one cat and three kittens to poisoning since January.
Two
of the kittens, Chaos and Wicca, both 8 months old, were put down this week.
She has one more cat, as well as a dog and young children, so she was worried about the situation.
"My young son's very angry at the fact that someone would do it on purpose," she said.
"We can't get any more cats if they're going to end up dead, it's just cruel."
SPCA general manager Rob Johnson said the poisoned cats had appeared lethargic with limited mobility, dilated pupils, no appetite and no control of bodily functions.
"It's just really disturbing that the cats have to be euthanised because they're dying such a slow, agonising death," he said.
"Someone's got a pathological hatred for cats in that street."
On Monday, the SPCA was called by a woman in the street whose kitten had been poisoned and on Wednesday, another cat was brought in to the SPCA displaying the same symptoms.
Mr Johnson said they initially thought someone may have laid snail bait out and the cats got into it.
But when the poisoning cases kept occurring a vet determined it was Ethylene Glycol, known as antifreeze poisoning.
"Someone's lacing some kind of meat or food with antifreeze. At least nine cats in one small street have been poisoned."
He is awaiting post-mortem examination results on the latest cat to have been poisoned to determine what meat it had eaten.
While Mr Johnson said it was possible a car had spilt antifreeze and the cats had licked it, he believed it was highly unlikely given that the cases had been reported consistently over five months on one street.
There hadn't been reports from surrounding streets, he said.
Mr Johnson and another staff member spoke to a number of people living in Davidson Ave to try to find further information.
"All the people we spoke to were really surprised that someone on the street could be doing that."
He said they were unsure what method was being used to poison the cats but they were continuing their investigation.
"This is an offence under the Animal Welfare Act and if we catch them we'll be throwing the book at them."
The SPCA will also investigate Vigor Brown St in Napier after five cats have been killed or gone missing since the start of the year.
* Mr Johnson urged any members of the public who lived in Davidson Ave or surrounding streets who might have information on the poisonings or whose own cat was poisoned to contact them, in confidence, on 06 8357758.
