A man wanted for questioning about a burglary in which nine guns were taken in Hastings last week was arrested after a brief bid to escape armed police yesterday.
Hastings CIB head detective, Senior Sergeant Sam Aberahama, said he and another detective were armed when they looked for the 19-year-old at a house in Lane Street, Mahora.
Police were also armed when they searched the house late on Friday afternoon, finding four of the firearms hidden in a bedroom, and arresting two women.
Mr Aberahama said the man was apprehended at the house yesterday, but "did a runner" as he was being led to a car. He was found soon afterwards hiding in nearby bushes.
The man and the two women, aged 33 and 23, have all been charged with receiving property stolen from a house in Avenue Road, Hastings, last Tuesday.
Appearing before two JPs in the Hastings District Court later yesterday, Guy Juan Jansen, 19, labourer, of Napier, also faced a charge of burgling a house in Queen Street West, Hastings, on October 21.
He entered no pleas, did not apply for bail, and was remanded in custody to appear again on Thursday, when the co-accused will also appear.
Mr Aberahama told Hawke's Bay Today police are "very concerned" about the whereabouts of the weapons which had not been recovered, and appealed for information about them. * Who's holding the guns? Call your local police, or the confidential Crimeline 0800-567789.
