WELL DONE INDIE: Indie Nikora took out silver yesterday in the u12 beach flags at the Oceans '23 New Zealand junior surf lifesaving championships.

Midway started the Oceans '23 New Zealand junior surf lifesaving championships at Mount Maunganui yesterday with a gold medal and three silvers.

Waikanae and Wainui have chimed in with a silver medal each.

Conditions were pretty tricky yesterday for the water events, with a two-to-three-foot swell and what was described as a “gnarly” shore break.

Dawson Building Midway's gold went to Sophia Castles in the under-11 run-swim-run, where she emerged a convincing winner.

The silver medals were won by Lilla Hain in the u13 beach flags and this morning in the u11 beach sprint.

Indie Nikora took out silver yesterday in the u12 beach flags and Blake Taylor won silver in the u11 boys' run-swim-run.

“The team's going well,” said Midway head coach Jack Gavin.

“Everyone's very positive. They're standing up to the challenge of that shore dump really well, and showing good skills.”

The silver medal Kaiaponi Farms Waikanae was won this morning when Georgie Beaufoy crossed second in the final of the u14 beach sprint.

“It was a really good race,” said club spokeswoman Michelle Mitchell.

“Georgie was catching the girl in front of her so it was a good second place.

“The team's meeting all their expectations and making lots of finals, which is great.”

Riversun's Wainui's silver medal went to Rori Fukushima-Hall.
