The contents of a sleepout on a property in Emily Street in Riverdale were badly damaged by fire mid-afternoon yesterday but fire crews got there in time to save the structure itself.
Fire and Emergency NZ sent crews at around 3.30pm yesterday afternoon.
“The residents were elsewhere on the property
at the time the fire started but they saw what was happening and were quick to alert us,” a senior firefighter said.
No one was inside the sleepout at the time.
“It appears the fire was started by a candle that had been left burning inside, and the flame from the candle ignited some nearby flammable material.”
