A courageous effort by a Mahia surfer in cold and challenging surf conditions averted a tragedy off Whangawehi harbour on the northern coast of Mahia Peninsula on Tuesday.

Two men found themselves fighting for their lives in the sea when their dinghy capsized 30 metres offshore.

One made it to shore. The other got into difficulty and drifted offshore into the heavy surf.

Surfer Duncan Bruce was checking sea conditions at about 12.30pm on Tuesday when he spotted the situation unfolding.

Police praised his actions and said he put himself at considerable risk.

Mr Bruce took a second surfboard with him to provide flotation for the man in the water.

Mahia policeman Constable Chad Prentice said it was an outstanding effort.

“He did a good job in very trying conditions. It would have been very challenging. He put himself at considerable risk to save a life.”

Other local people made an effort to assist the rescue but Mr Bruce was able to bring the man ashore safely with the second board.

Wairoa police said Search and Rescue was contacted and a rescue helicopter was dispatched.

A Mahia St John ambulance crew also attended.

Const Prentice said it was incredibly lucky Mr Bruce was there. It could have turned out far worse.

“It is again a reminder about water safety — check the conditions and don't take risks.”
