Another editorial bemoaning Britain’s decision to leave the EU, and a continuation of similar stories being printed and broadcast in the world’s media.
The problem with that is these negative reports risk becoming self-fulfilling prophecies. The people of Britain voted and the majority, whether it be slim or overwhelming, decided
they wanted to leave — and that, people, is democracy in action.
The stock market is recovering already as people and companies realise that the result of the exit vote is not as dire as some would have you believe. There are already 34 calls for referendums from countries in the EU on whether to stay in or leave — sort of funny when there are only 27 members left, but it shows you the feelings of the citizens of these countries.
If you want to understand the reasoning of the majority of Britons, just transpose New Zealand across the globe to the UK’s position — then know that you have no control of your own border, you have no control over your judicial system, you have no control over your own country’s trade terms, you have no control over your fishing grounds; all of these and much more are controlled from a foreign country. As a New Zealander, what would you vote for?
