Bridge one lane tomorrow

Gladstone Road Bridge will be partially closed to traffic tomorrow.

Tairawhiti Roads is advising road users that the bridge will be reduced to one lane from 8am to about midday tomorrow while contractors work to install precast columns across the bridge.

Due to heavy rain last Wednesday, the work crew had to postpone the installation, which meant another lane closure has been added to the schedule, Tairawhiti Roads general manager Dave Hadfield said.

Manual traffic controllers would be in place to manage traffic on the bridge while the lane was closed.

“Traffic builds up on Wainui Road, Childers Road and Customhouse Street when the lane is closed, so drivers should consider an alternative route or allow an extra 10 minutes for their journey.

“Gladstone Road Bridge is one of Gisborne’s busiest thoroughfares but locals have been very patient and understanding while work has been under way.

“The Tairawhiti Roads team would like to thank the community for bearing with us.”

After the lane closure tomorrow, there will be three further lane closures to finish installing columns and balustrades.

The bridge is being widened to create a shared walking and cycling path.
