Eight Te Wharekura O Mauao English students will grace a Wellington stage later this month for the annual University of Otago Sheilah Winn Shakespeare Festival.
The students created their own rendition of the play Macbeth with a Maori twist using haka and Maori costumes in the performance.
Directed by Zoe Creek, Geri Allen and Wiremu Mako the 12-minute play was put together in about a week.
Director Geri Allen said Macbeth had strong links to ideas in Maori culture such as clans and tribes.
Each year Shakespeare Globe Centre New Zealand holds 23 festivals nationwide, in which high school students perform five and 15-minute scenes from Shakespeare's plays, set in any time, place or dress - although in Shakespeare's words.
