A small scrub fire which threatened to destroy a nearby campervan is being investigated by police.

Firefighters were called to the fire on Mark Ave, Mount Maunganui about 1.30pm this afternoon.

Resident Maxine Hansen said she drove in the driveway and noticed something strange out of the corner of her eye.

She walked back out towards the road and saw 2m flames going up into the tree about 1m away from her friend's campervan.

She asked a neighbour to call the fire brigade and while another used a fire extinguisher and garden hose to put out the blaze.
