Morning mist before heavy rain, thunderstorms

A morning of eerie mist has started has ushered in wet days for Tauranga.

Morning mist yesterday and today was "unusual", Metservice meteoroligist Ciaran Doolin said.

"We had quite a lot of low cloud across the central North Island. There's quite a lot of moisture over the country at the moment, that was responsible for the low cloud."

Mr Doolin said Tauranga could expect cloud today, with drizzle turning to showers towards the evening and northerlies.

Tomorrow would bring rain with some heavy falls clearing overnight.

Mr Doolin said there was also the possibility of thunderstorms through the day.

Tauranga could expect northerlies to freshen the morning, changing to south westerlies in the evening.

Sunday should be fine with relatively light winds.
