Papamoa Surf Lifesaving Club has a new communication system thanks to a hefty donation from a local fast food restaurant.
KFC Papamoa has donated more than $8000 to the surf club, which funded the purchase of 10 state-of-the-art radios for better communication between lifeguards and with other surf clubs and
emergency service providers, and a mobile emergency PA system for use during rescue operations and roaming beach patrols.
Papamoa Surf Lifesaving general manager Kurt Wilson said the new equipment meant lifeguards could better communicate between themselves, could communicate with Omanu and Mt Surf Clubs and change the channel and speak directly to emergency services.
Mr Wilson said the club's old, inadequate system had been in "dire need of replacement".
"As a not-for-profit organisation we rely on the generosity of sponsors and the local community to help fund much of our operations. Our thanks goes to KFC for this much-needed equipment is already helping our lifeguards to better patrol Papamoa beach and ultimately help us keep the community safe."
