Les Taylor's homemade letterbox stood undamaged at the end of his drive on Brookfield Terrace for 20 years _ until Saturday night when someone put a firework inside it.
The firework was placed in a glass jar, lit and left to explode, setting the letterbox Mr Taylor had made ablaze.
"I woke
up on Sunday morning and couldn't believe what I saw _ my letterbox had been burnt down.
"The heat had melted the glass jar, there was just a hunk of molten glass left. Whoever did this, set it up to be burnt. The letterbox must have just burnt out but it could have been a lot worse."
Mr Taylor, 63, said both he and his wife, Lesley, had been angered by what happened.
But they were not the only target on Brookfield Terrace on Saturday night as his neighbour's letterbox was also set alight by a firework.
"It's a real nuisance. It seems more and more of this type of thing is happening every year," Mr Taylor said.
"It is a good start to maybe ending Guy Fawkes night and the public buying fireworks.
"Today it was my letterbox, but tomorrow, who knows?
"I think it is time for fireworks to be banned. It has to be a major nuisance to the fire brigade.
"I do not begrudge public firework displays but because these incendiaries are becoming more ... powerful, in the hands of some people, they can do real damage."
