Police have confirmed the body found at Kauri Point Wharf this morning was of missing fisherman Peato Ilalio.

At about 10.15am this morning the Police Dive Squad located Mr Ilalio's body, who was seen in difficulties off wharf near Katikati on January 2.

The Navy were conducting a sonar search of the area when the body floated to the surface.

The family have asked to pass on their sincere thanks to all who help with the search and being able to bring their loved one back to them.

Sergeant Craig Madden of the Police Search and Rescue team said he would like to thank all the volunteer groups which assisted in the three day search including Waihi Beach Coastguard, Waihi Beach Suff Club, the Trustpower TECT Rescue helicopter, Tauranga Harbour Warden, Tauranga Land Search and Rescue.
