Baby on agenda: Labour's three day caucus retreat

It has been a whirlwind week for Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern with no slow down yet.

Today Labour Party MPs will gather at a Wairarapa country retreat to kick off a three day caucus meeting.

Ardern's pregnancy is sure to be on the agenda as well as planning and reviewing Labour's 100 Day Plan.

Much progress has been made on the 100 Day Plan already with free tertiary fees for first year students and increases to student allowances already ticked off.

Legislation to allow people with chronic pain or terminal illness access to medicinal cannabis has been introduced and the Healthy Homes Guarantee has been passed.

The legislation requires rentals to be warm, dry and well-ventilated. Landlords must guarantee that any new tenancy from July 1 next year must be either properly insulated or contain a heating source able to make the home warm and dry. All tenancies must meet the new standards by July 1, 2024.

Labour press secretary Leah Haines said said there would "of course be excitement about the Prime Minister's recent personal news".

"After that the focus will turn to the 100 Day Plan and establishing the priorities for the coming year."

On Thursday Ardern used social media to announce to New Zealand she and partner Clarke Gayford were going to become parents.

And we thought 2017 was a big year! Clarke and I are really excited that in June our team will expand from two to three, and that we’ll be joining the many parents out there who wear two hats. I’ll be Prime Minister AND a mum, and Clarke will be “first man of fishing” and stay at home dad. I think it’s fair to say that this will be a wee one that a village will raise, but we couldn’t be more excited. I know there will be lots of questions, and we’ll answer all of them (I can assure you we have a plan all ready to go!) But for now, bring on 2018.

The couple then held a press conference outside their Point Chevalier home to confirm the news that has lead the news internationally.

In just over a week Ardern will unveil news on her other baby - the flagship bill as Minister of Child Poverty Reduction.

The bill will require governments to set and monitor poverty measures.

All aspects of the 100 Day Plan had a deadline of February 3 and Ardern's focus is to make that date.
