Wellington Police are hunting a man who chased a woman down a Wellington pathway before tackling and pinning her to the ground.

Police said the offender was trailing the woman along a pathway which leads from The Terrace to Boyd Wilson Field about 10.30pm on January 20.

"After putting on a balaclava the male ran after the female and tackled her to the ground," police said.

"The male has pinned the woman on the ground for a short time before jumping up and running back down the pathway."

Police said the man was white, about 20 to 30 years old and wearing a grey Adidas hoodie, knee length green camouflage shorts, blue shoes and white socks at the time of the attack.

Police asked anyone who recognised the man to contact Detective Constable Sam McKenzie at the Wellington Police on 04 381 2000 or information can be shared anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
