Murder charge following Whangarei death

A man has been charged with murder after the death of a 61-year-old man at a house north of Whangarei last night.

Investigations are continuing today at the Ngararatunua property after an armed police stand off yesterday evening.

The Armed Offenders Squad were called to the Church Road at 6.30pm with cordons placed at either end of the road.

The offender was taken into custody without incident.

About 16 staff were now working on the case including forensic specialists from ESR.

Police were also talking to a number of witnesses.

A post mortem of the body will be carried out in Auckland tomorrow.

A 48-year-old man will appear in the Whangarei District Court today on a murder charge.
