New cycle trail stretch opened in Waihi

May 5 - Cyclists will now be able to bike through the stunning scenery of Karangahake Gorge after the Hauraki rail trail was officially opened today.

The 77km trail, the sixth stretch of the New Zealand cycle trail to be completed, was opened by Associate Tourism Minister Chris Tremain at a ceremony in Waikino Gorge in Waihi.

Mr Tremain said the trail was close to Auckland, Tauranga and Hamilton, and its proximity to airports would be a drawcard for international visitors.

"I predict this cycle trail will quickly become the weekend getaway of choice for many families.''

The trail mostly follows an old railway line and is almost completely flat, making it ideal for cyclists of all ages and abilities, especially families.

Mr Tremain said the journey was packed with lush bush, rich pioneering history and vintage railway lines.

"The breathtaking Karangahake Gorge, the site of the original gold rush back in 1875, is just one of many highlights along the trail.''

Mr Tremain opened the trail with Hauraki Mayor John Tregidga and Olympic gold medal-winning cyclist Sarah Ulmer, who is a national cycle trail ambassador.

The ceremony would be followed by a short ride featuring Ulmer.

The latest stretch of the national cycleway cost the Government $4 million and was built in partnership with the Hauraki, Matamata-Piako and Thames-Coromandel councils and the Department of Conservation.
