A large quantity of rubbish, including many recyclable items, was collected on Castlecliff Beach during the Whanganui District Council Youth Committee's clean-up afternoon.
The event, on Saturday, was to celebrate New Zealand Sea Week.
District Councillor Josh Chandulal-Mackay estimated 50-60 people took part.
"I was really impressed with the turnout," Mr Chandulal-Mackay said.
"We had a number of elderly people and young families. It was a nice family afternoon."
The main focus was the stretch of beach between the Duncan Pavilion and the North Mole, although some people picked up rubbish at the other end of the beach as well.
"There was quite a large number of recyclables so Hadi Gurton from the Resource Recovery Centre dropped off some bins for us and we have deposited the recyclables with the Resource Recovery Centre," Mr Chandulal-Mackay said.
The clean-up was followed by a sausage sizzle and games of beach volleyball.
