Local fruit and vege magnate Gordon Lambert had a special reason to be racing two horses at Ellerslie last Saturday.
Big premier day money was on offer at Awapuni, but instead Lambert sent two of his team, ageless Mels Bad Boy and a rejuvenated Mi Payday, to Auckland.
"I've never won at Awapuni. I just don't seem to do too well there," he said yesterday.
But that wasn't the case at Ellerslie where Mi Payday won and Mels Bad Boy ran second at his 84th start, taking his earnings past $80,000.
"Mels Bad Boy runs better right-handed and he's still in good nick for an eight-year-old. Steve [trainer Steve Crutchley] said he hasn't got a single sore joint."
Mi Payday has regained form after recovering from a back injury and Saturday's win was her fourth from 29 starts.
Lambert says his interest in racing - he races five gallopers as well as a trotter named Old Beach Road - is underpinned by his buoyant business Hill St Greens, which he started more than 30 years ago.
And, of course, Mi Jubilee, his speedy mare from several years ago, won $400,000. Sadly she broke a leg in a race in Queensland.
Lambert is now looking forward to watching his newest team member, Golden Jubilee, in action. She's off to the trials today.
Lucky escape
Alvin Ng took a spectacular fall in the sixth at Ellerslie on Saturday, but fortunately suffered no serious injury, apart from heavy concussion and a bruised hip. He is expected to be out of action for the mandatory three weeks.
Rest for Lincoln
Karaka Million winner Fort Lincoln will be rested after feeling the effects of hard racing.
He was well beaten in Saturday's Manawatu Sires and had a slower than usual recovery rate.
Awapuni Gold Cup-winning jockey Jamie Bullard has been suspended from April 11 to 22 inclusive.
Family continues
The Thomson dynasty lives on.
One-time champion jockey Brent Thomson and trainer dad Kevin were major players in New Zealand racing in the 1970s and 80s.
Brent went on to make a huge success of his career in Australia and Hong Kong.
Now Brent's 29-year-old daughter Kylie is a hobby trainer in Palmerston North.
She has a six-year-old mare, Forever, in work. She was sixth in her debut recently, but Kylie says she will improve in winter footing.
Kylie, who is a health and safety manager with a fuel company, said dad, a bloodstock agent in Melbourne, had given her great encouragement.
Granddad is Eric Ropiha, a one-time leading trainer.
