Golfing holidays have become par for the course for British buddies Barry Nicholson and Harold Cresswell.
Every December for the past six years, Barry and Harold have escaped a bitter English winter and ended up a few days later teeing off at a golf course in New Zealand.
They were in Wanganui last week to enjoy a round at Belmont.
"They get bloody jealous back home, I can tell you," says Harold, who lives in the same Cumbrian town as Barry.
Barry chips in: "We just love it. We've worked hard, got the money, we aren't married any more, so why not enjoy life. And a golfing holiday is a great way to see this great country."
When they're not on a course somewhere, they're indulging in their other favourite pastime, fishing.
Barry, 62, is a retired engineer, who has worked extensively abroad.
"Sudan was a dangerous place, and I was in Uganda when Idi Amin was going crazy. It was grim. I was detained a few times and I saw people killed. It was very nasty," he said.
Harold, 67, is a former truck and taxi driver, who chauffeured wedding parties around in his Rolls Royce.
Both say they've made plenty of friends in New Zealand over the years.
They've played plenty of courses as well: Tauranga, Rotorua, Mt Maunganui, Wairakei, Marton, and of course, Belmont and Castlecliff.
"Wairakei's the best, but there's a cracker hidden away in Taumarunui.
" It's a real belter," says Harold.
"And playing golf here is so cheap, easily half what it costs in England."
They're looking forward to next week when they take part in a mixed teams event at Marton.
"One of the blokes organising it says he will jack us up with some partners," says Barry with a glint in his eye.
Both head home in April where they'll no doubt play more golf in readiness for a return to these shores in December. Harold also hopes to come out swinging when he visits Florida in the middle of the year.
Carry on golfing for British chums
