Work continues on measures to improve the performance of Wanganui's wastewater treatment plant.

Mayor Annette Main said council staff had been working on various types of aerators for the plant and the first of the new jet aerators was installed yesterday.

Ms Main said increasing the level of oxygen in the pond was one of the medium-term measures wastewater experts Cardno BTO had recommended and she said the new aerators would make a significant difference.

Council will receive Cardno BTO's report on the long-term options for the plant on April 29.
