Artists were each sent an old school chair, to do with whatever they wanted.

Artists were each sent an old school chair, to do with whatever they wanted.

Catherine MacDonald and a friend have decided hers is an amiable chair.

The Wanganui artist is one of 30 nationwide asked to decorate an old school chair for an exhibition during the Open Artist Studio weekends. The exhibition will be in Waverley.

After taking hers apart, it is now reassembled.

"I haven't finished it yet so not sure what I am going to call it. But we decided it looked like an amiable chair, it was very friendly looking."

Organiser of the Chair Project Lisa Walsh of Waverley said many artists were happy to take part because it was fun, different from commissions, exhibitions, deadlines and the making money part of being an artist.

The 30 artists have been given the same school chair as a canvas and they all will be exhibited in Waverley as part of the Artists Open Studios in the past two weekends of March.

There are no rules, apart from the chair.

The chairs were donated by Lisa and her husband Jimi Walsh, and came from the old Waverley scout hall. They too will be transforming a chair each for the show.

Catherine MacDonald said she was quite excited to be part of the group project and to do something completely different.

Once she took possession of the chair she know instantly what she was going to do - then went with another concept entirely.

"I took the seat and back apart and decorated the steel with blocks of wood and stuff from my and my dad's back yard."

Lisa Walsh says the artists in the Chair Project come from a diverse background and people should "expect to see the unexpected and marvel at how the artists have transformed a simple chair into stunning artworks." The exhibition is free, and will run March 22-23 and March 29-30 at Waverley Community Centre in Chester St. The official opening is March 22 at 7pm.

The artists include Zoe Nash, Liz Wilkinson, Diane Atkinson, Phillipa Kenny, Bev Goodwin and Jeff Thomson.

Some of the chairs will be for sale. Visitors are able to purchase directly from the artists.

Artists Open Studios 2014 is held annually and visitors can see more than 60 studios and galleries, and experience more than 100 artists and their world around the greater Wanganui district.
