Wanganui residents are encouraged to attend a free public seminar in Palmerston North about macular degeneration, the leading cause of blindness in New Zealand.
The July 12 seminar will be run by Macular Degeneration New Zealand (MDNZ), who hope to get the word out to as many people in the
Wanganui/Manawatu region as possible.
Macular degeneration is a chronic eye disease, accounting for 48 per cent of blindness in New Zealand. One in seven people over 50 show some evidence of the disease, and one quarter of people over 80 suffer from vision loss. The disease is three times more prevalent than dementia and half as prevalent as diabetes, MDNZ said.
MDNZ is a charitable trust aiming to reduce the incidence and impact of the disease. The seminar will be held on Saturday, July 12 in the Steeple Room of the Steeple Conference Centre of the Copthorne Hotel, 110 Fitzherbert Ave, Palmerston North. It will run from 10am to 11.30. Dr John Ah-Chan, a local ophthalmologist, will provide information on treatments and research and provide guidance on living with MD.
To register to attend this seminar, phone 0800 MACULA (622 852) or email info@mdnz.org.nz
