A New Zealand Police torch arrived in Whanganui yesterday marking the 75th anniversary of women joining the police ranks.
Two relays, one starting at Cape Reinga and the other at Bluff, are both heading to Wellington and will meet there next weekend. But yesterday it was Whanganui's turn with thetorch being carried by waka from Putiki to the Union Boat Club before Constable Tanya Ross (left) handed it to Sergeant Rachel Willemsen on horseback.
Sergeant Willemsen carried the torch up Victoria Ave and then to the Bell St station where both sworn and non-sworn women gathered.
A bus trip to the Chateau followed where the torch was handed over to Taranaki representatives. The relay tours Taranaki today before heading to the capital.PHOTO/BEVAN CONLEY240716WCBRCPol01.JPG
