Man spotted down driveway was trying to break into cars

Robert John Barnes admitted trying to break into cars when police came across him down someone's driveway one night.

In the Whanganui District Court on Tuesday, Barnes pleaded guilty to five counts of unlawfully being in an enclosed area and one shoplifting charge.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Drew Morrison said on Sunday, October 9, Barnes walked down five driveways, looking into vehicles.

"The explanation he gave police was that he had been breaking into cars," Mr Morrison said.

He was located by police about 3.10am in the last of the five driveways, having been observed entering each one.

Judge Dugald Matheson said Barnes had 16 pages of criminal history, including a lot of dishonesty convictions, before sentencing him to three months' imprisonment.

Meanwhile, Dylan Antoni Bills pleaded guilty to drink driving when he appeared in the Whanganui court this week.

On Friday, October 20, at 7.17pm, Bills was stopped by police in Whanganui for a routine check.

His breath alcohol level was 487mcg.

Defence lawyer Anna Brosnahan said it was moderate level offence and Bills was studying and working part-time.

Judge Matheson convicted Bills and ordered him to pay a $470 fine.
