A man in his thirties was seriously injured in a logging accident in the Waimarino Forest on Thursday morning, St John Ruapehu manager Mark Fredericks says.

"As far as I am aware a tree has landed on our patient. The tree had been removed before our arrival."

St John got the call just after 10am. The accident happened during a commercial logging operation in forest 18km west of Raetihi.

A road ambulance was able to get close to the site by 11.10am, and the Palmerston North Rescue Helicopter arrived about the same time.

The man was stabilised by an intensive care paramedic, before being flown to Waikato Hospital. He was still in a serious condition yesterday, Mr Fredericks believed.
