New Zealand-owned food delivery service Delivereasy has arrived in Whanganui.

The company, founded five years ago, works by signing up restaurants interested in providing food via delivery, with customers using an app to order.

It began operating in Whanganui on Wednesday.

Delivery drivers are not employees of either the restaurant or Delivereasy - instead classed as independent contractors who choose their own hours and make their own tax arrangements.

Currently available on the platform in Whanganui is a variety of restaurants, including McDonald's, Burger King, Subway, and Pita Pit.

Locally owned businesses are also available on the platform, including Kool's Chicken and Burger Cartel.

Director Nick Foster was in Whanganui on Tuesday and told the Chronicle the reception in the city had so far been great.

"By all accounts, it looks like Whanganui should be quite a good market for us. Other similarly populated markets like New Plymouth, Upper Hutt, Porirua, and Invercargill are really big for us as a company," Foster said.

Yesterday afternoon, a number of businesses around Whanganui had already dipped their toes into the new platform, with Subway on Victoria Ave having received two orders by early afternoon.

"It's something new, it's a bit exciting," owner Bryan Foothead said.

The business already runs its own delivery service which will still operate, with Delivereasy another "funnel" of income into the business.

"We do have our own, which keeps me busy making our sandwiches, this will be on top.

"[From what I've heard], people are excited. It's something new."

It was a similar sentiment next door at Cafe Anatolia and owner Ercan Ocak said the arrival of the service in town was exciting for consumers.

"We've just started today, and we've had five orders," Ocak said.

"It's good for the customer, not to have to go out to buy their food."
