Festival favourite to open new film society season

FAMILY TIES: Festival favourite Our Little Sister is the curtain raiser for the 2017 film society season.

WHANGANUI Film Society will have a first screening for the year as well as a fundraiser on Monday night.

Our Little Sister was a NZ International Film Festival favourite in 2015 - this is its first screening in Whanganui.

Director Kore-eda Hirokazu is well known for his fractured family dramas - including I Wish and Like Father, Like Son, which were crowd pleasers in the Film Society's 2015 programme.

Our Little Sister centres on the lives of three 20-something sisters, who meet their teenage half-sister for the first time at their estranged father's funeral, and invite her to live with them.

Popular with audiences and critics alike, Our Little Sister has been described as "deeply charming and quietly moving" (Time Out), "a vitamin boost for the soul" (The Guardian), and, according to NY Times reviewer A O Scott, it "leaves the viewer both sated and intoxicated".

In 2017, the Whanganui Film Society is introducing half-year membership options for both halves of the season ($45 or $40 discounted), in addition to three-film samplers ($30) and full year memberships ($90 or $80 discounted).

All membership details can be found online or in the brochures, which will be out around town this week. A full membership gives access to all 31 films in the season.
