A gingerbread house studded with lollies and candyfloss took out the supreme award at Bulls' Wearabull Art Awards on Saturday night.

Kristine Hart's entry was made of Corflute board, covered with lollies made of stuffed fabric and cottonwool candyfloss. Inside the gingerbread house from the Hansel and Gretel fairy tale was a witch in a blood-spattered apron.

Titled Unhappily Never Ever After, Mrs Hart's entry was a retelling of the fairy tale - in which both children are cooked by the witch. She said the event was good fun.

"I like creating and getting out and supporting local shows."

The crowd was impressed by her entry's "incredible detail", Bulls community development manager Jan Harris said.

Her prize was tickets to the World of Wearable Arts (WOW) Awards Show in Wellington next month and a gift basket.

Deciding the winner must have been difficult, Mrs Harris said, because previous winner Laura Atkins' entry, silver and blue and titled Siren of the Tasman Sea, was also outstanding.

The awards took place in Bulls Town Hall. There were 26 entries in six categories, four for adults and two for children.

Child winners included Alannah Mullins' entry White Snow's Apple Fairytale, and Stella Beaven and Maia McKenna's Save the Seas.

The annual event included music and interviews, as well as viewing the clothing creations on a catwalk.

It was the first Mrs Harris had organised. She has been the town's community development manager only since mid-July.

"The hall was set out as a secret garden and it looked exquisite," she said.

She was also pleased to get lots of support.

"For my first time I had lots of amazing helpers that just got in and did it, and were still back here this morning helping clean up," she said.
