Wanganui Airport rocked like never before on Saturday afternoon when Kiwi band Opshop flew in for a unique tarmac gig.
Wanganui was the sixth stop on the band's frenetic "10 gigs in one day" tour, which saw the band perform free at nine airports throughout the country - plus a mid-air gig while flying over Aoraki-Mt Cook.
The day started with a concert at Christchurch airport, at the un-rock 'n' roll hour of 6am, following by gigs at Timaru, Hokitika, Nelson, Wanganui, Napier, Gisborne, Hamilton and Auckland.
Organiser of the Wanganui gig, Des Te Weri, said an enthusiastic crowd of around 400 turned out to see the band and local support band, Jaded.
"Wanganui was sixth on the list and up to that point it was actually the biggest crowd on the tour.
"It was great publicity for Wanganui."
He said the crowd was a great range of people - from kids through to teenagers and adults.
"Opshop have a pretty decent following here in Wanganui."
Mr Te Weri said Wanganui was the only airport where the band performed on the tarmac - the others were inside the terminal.
He said Jaded received an enthusiastic reception from the crowd.
The "10 gigs in one day" tour kicked off New Zealand Music Month, now in its 10th year.
