A person became trapped and was seriously injured after a car crashed into a fence along State Highway 1 near Marton on Wednesday afternoon.

Two Marton fire crews arrived at the scene and took approximately half an hour to extract the person from the vehicle.

A spokesperson for St John said an ambulance picked up and transported one patient in a serious condition to Whanganui Base Hospital.

Police were informed of the crash between Colemans Rd and Norwood Lane at about 2.55pm.

The road remained open.
