Story began as a pop-up shop on Alexandra St run by five friends. The first eight-week trial went so well, it opened for a second time - this time for nine weeks.

Now, two of the founding collective, Angela Thompson and Michelle Bayley, have opened up a permanent residence on Victoria St, next to Hazel Hayes cafe.

The new store opened on August 10 following repeated calls from fans on social media.

It stocks 100 per cent New Zealand-designed and -made products.

Angela said the name came to them when they realised every product and every creator came with a story.

"A story about them as a creative people, why they do what they do, and as a shop we are a story of New Zealand," she said.

"There aren't any stores like us at this price range. You can easily come in and get a gift for $30," Michelle said.

The pair said their mission was to bring Hamilton the best of New Zealand-made, and they stock products from Auckland to Dunedin.

Angela said another selling point of the store was that all the products came in limited quantities, and there would therefore be new products every time.

An estimated 30 per cent of the products come from Hamiltonians.

Some favourite suppliers include Lilyrose, which sells scented soy candles in recycled vintage glassware and crockery, and the Wouldn't Know 'Em From a Bar of Soap company, producers of cured homemade soaps from two Hamilton sisters who call themselves the Soap Nutters.

The duo said the store gave Kiwi designers and creators a place to showcase their work in a fun and friendly environment.

Angela said she would love more quality creators to contact them, if they wanted to add their product to the shelves.

"It would be lovely if they could include a small story about themselves and a few images of their work and we would go from there."

Both owners also run their own creative businesses, with their products sold in the store.

Angela founded Twig and Little, which specialises in laser-cut plywood jewellery, and Michelle runs Limited Vintage, which specialises in cushions made from up-cycled vintage blankets.

The pair said their next challenge would be the launch of a VIP card and the Story Box, a gift box jam-packed with Kiwi-created gifts.

"Gift boxes nowadays are all cellophane and food, we want to do something different," Angela said.
