A fresh and modified version of the national game aimed at introducing young children to the sport was showcased in Rotorua this week.
Rippa Rugby, which teaches children the fundamentals skills used in the game in a safe and non-contact environment, was demonstrated to Rotorua's primary school teachers
at a special session at Lynmore Primary School on Monday.
Bay of Plenty Rugby Union's Development Manager Joe Panapa and Development Officer Hika Reid led the session with students from Lynmore and Malfroy primary schools, showcasing the shortened game which sees participants wear special belt bags that are ripped off instead of participants making a tackle.
"Rippa Rugby aims to get more kids playing the sport, especially more girls," Panapa told the Daily Post.
"It's a fun, non-contact version of the game played in a safe environment that teaches the primary skills of rugby. In addition we're equipping all the teachers with a special teaching resource and practical kit that will enable them to take it back to their school."
Rippa Rugby is expected to be included in the festivities leading up to the Lions rugby game against Bay of Plenty in Rotorua on June 4.
Forty teams from the Central Bay of Plenty region will play for the mantle of Lions Rippa Rugby Champions in a special one-off tournament to be held at Kuirau Park.
