Soccer: United looking to upset Whakatane

Ngongotaha and Rotorua United both face stiff challenges in the WaiBop Federation One league.

United, who are languishing in eleventh place, take on fourth-placed Whakatane Town tomorrow at Neil Hunt Park .

Based on results to date the visitors should be too strong for United and most will be expecting them to win comfortably.

But, and there is always a but in sport, United have shown glimpses of their ability this season and with home support could upset the visitors.

Last time the two teams met at Neil Hunt Park the home side lost in a close encounter 4-3.

Their WaiBop division two side, who are in bottom place, play the early game against West Hamilton.

Ngongotaha, who host high-flying AFC Fury at Stembridge Rd, will be hoping they can rebound from last week's loss to Cambridge.

The Villagers have shown they have the ability to challenge for the title but they need to win this game to stay in touch with the top two.

Last time the two teams met Ngongotaha almost won the match, coming away with a 3-3 draw.

Competition leaders Tauranga Old Blues are at home against Tauranga City who upset Taupo 5-0 last weekend.

Waikato Unicol should take three points from their game against bottom of the table Otumoetai, while Matamata Swifts travel to Gower Park to play Melville.

There are four WaiBop league sides involved in the second round of the Chatham Cup on Queens Birthday Monday.

Tauranga Old Blues meet Manurewa, AFC Fury play East Coast Bays, Cambridge take on Birkenhead and Taupo meet Three Kings United.
