The visitors silenced the Ngongotaha supporters minutes after the restart when they equalised and then missed a simple opportunity before the O'Sullivan show resumed.
Scoring four goals in 15 minutes, O'Sullivan made it 6-2 and, although Tauranga scored from a corner to make it 6-3, at full time it was the Villagers' supporters and players who were smiling. Coach Shane Davis was claiming it was an inspired tactical decision to shift O'Sullivan from midfield to striker.
He said no one could recall a player scoring six goals in a WaiBop Federation 1 league game before.
O'Sullivan, who has been in good goal scoring form this season, is now well in front in the race for the golden boot.
Meanwhile, it was sighs of relief at Crown Park where Taupo registered their first win while scoring their first goals in a 2-0 win over Otumoetai.
"We've got that monkey off our back," Taupo coach Ben Westerman said.
"But to be honest it could have been 8-0, so we've still got some shooting practice to do."
They also retain the WaiBop Challenge Shield.
Calum Christie and player of the day Dave Stewart were the scorers.
Efforts to contact Rotorua United were futile and the silence probably reflected how they felt about their 3-0 loss to Waikato Unicol.
Whakatane Town and AFC Fury battled out a tense 1-1 draw.
It was the first points that Fury had dropped this year and the two sides will meet again next week in the Chatham Cup.
Tauranga Old Blues are now the only side with a 100 per cent win record after beating Melville 4-0, while Cambridge defeated Matamata 3-2.
Division two results:
Cambridge 5 Matamata 0, Old Blues 6 Papamoa 4, Tauranga Boys' College 4 Tauranga City 0, HRFC 8 West Hamilton 1 and Te Awamutu 2 Tokoroa 1.
