The Bay of Plenty Rugby Union's decision to hire former Ponsonby captain Joe Royal as a regional rugby administrator for the Central Bay of Plenty is another step to pour unprecedented resources into developing the game in the sub-unions.
Royal, who worked in a similar capacity in primary and intermediateschools for the Auckland Rugby Union, has just begun his role and will play his club rugby for Rotoiti.
Speaking from an Eastern Bay of Plenty Rippa Rugby World Cup in Whakatane, Royal said he is looking forward to getting stuck into the role.
Originally from Rotorua, the hooker, who can also play both sides of the scrum, attended Te Aute College in Hawke's Bay - like Western Bay of Plenty rugby development officer Kane Hames.
Bay of Plenty Rugby Union operations manager Neil Alton said Royal's role came about in a partnership with Rotorua Boys' High School that will see him based at the school for twlo days per week.
The main part of his role will be in servicing secondary schools. He will also focus on the transitions from junior to secondary school rugby and back to club and colts rugby in an effort to encourage both players and coaches to continue their involvement in the game.
Royal will act as a liaison with the Te Waiariki Maori Rugby Committee to help improve Maori rugby both on and off the field. Alton described the establishment of the role as an indication of the union's commitment to increasing the quality and quantity of rugby players across the region.
"We are really pleased to have secured Joe's skills and knowledge and we are confident he will make a really positive contribution."
