"During the last few years the boxing club has been all girls because the boys have been staying at home and playing with their Barbie dolls, or who knows what they are up to," he said.
Godfery said the girls had experience in different sport codes.
"The youngest is 18 and the oldest is under 30. These girls are all top athletes and a lot of them play rep sport in other codes."
He said the fight night was all about promoting not only physical toughness but mental toughness, self confidence and discipline.
"They are trying to role model for other girls in our community."
Godfery said the girls were carrying a lot of the disciplines learned in boxing through to other aspects of life.
Community groups in Kawerau have got behind the event, including Te Wananga o Aotearoa, Tuwharetoa Ki Kawerau Health, Education and Social Services and Manna Support Services.
"In between the fights we will have a variety of entertainment, all performed by women, things like singing, dancing and Zumba." There will also be guest speakers promoting women's health.
Another twist will see ring girls substituted for ring men, who will carry the round number signs.
Prices to attend the event start at $5 and go up to $310 for a ringside table, which seats six. The event is being held on May 15 at 6pm, at the Ron Hardie Recreation Centre in Kawerau. Tickets can be purchased from Kawerau's Te Wananga o Aotearoa, Tuwharetoa Ki Kawerau Health, Education and Social Services and Manna Support Services.
