Rotorua swimmer Kane Radford finished sixth in the 10km open water swim at the junior Pan Pacific championships in Guam today.
The 18-year-old former Oceania champion swam aggressively and led for much of the four laps.
However, he was unable to shake a small group of chasers who out-kicked him on thefinal lap.
American Ryan Feeley won in one hour 53 minutes 37.65 seconds with Radford only seven seconds back in sixth.
New Zealand won five medals at the meet, including two golds to Daniel Bell of Auckland and one to Wellingtonian Gareth Kean.
