The Eastern Pirates are off to a good start in the after-Christmas reserve grade cricket competition but will face powerhouse team Geyser City this weekend.

The Reserve Championship enters into round four (of seven) today.

Eastern Pirates have won two and had another game rained off this season putting them in a strong position to make the semifinals.

Pirates captain Des Beckett said his side were coming into some good form and they hoped to topple a strong Geyser side today at Ray Boord Park.

"We are starting to get more numbers along and a slightly stronger team. It has been good to get a few more boys involved," he said. "Geyser 1 probably have the No1 team on paper in the competition but that doesn't mean we won't enjoy beating them."

He said they did not train during the week so it had taken most of the season to get the team gelling together.

"It has taken us half a year to get going and we are starting to be a handful for opposition teams."

Beckett said the season had been played in good spirits so far and the grounds were in good condition across Rotorua.

The competition includes seven teams from Rotorua and Taupo, with one team getting a bye each week.

The top four sides will progress to the semifinals of the 40-over competition late next month.

In other games today, the Bay of Plenty Indians and Central Cricket Club will meet at Smallbone Park, and Taupo Old Blues and Taupo Wanderers will meet at Kaimanawa Reserve in Taupo.

Reserve grade draw today (game starts at 1pm):

Eastern Pirates v Geyser 1, Ray Boord Park 1; Bay of Plenty Indians v Central, Smallbone Park; Taupo Old Boys v Taupo Wanderers, Kaimanawa Reserve 1; Geyser Fossils bye.
